What is Visualize ASL Volume 1?
Visualize American Sign Language Volume 1 is an interactive CD for learners to practice basic American Sign Language vocabulary.
The best way to learn ASL is to hang out with Deaf people who use ASL. This CD is a great tool for expanding your vocabulary and empowering you to have conversations with confidence.
Where is the text? In an effort to encourage you to Visualize ASL, all vocabulary items are represented with graphic images rather than with English words. The only exception is the word "Deaf" is included. "Deaf" is the preferred term among members of the community whose primary mode of communication is American Sign Language. "Hearing impaired", "deaf mute", "deaf and dumb" or other terms associated with hearing loss are considered offensive and should be avoided.
Sign variation — There are many vocabulary items that have more than one sign just as English has different words for the same concept (for example: couch, sofa, davenport). ASL is a living language with regional variations. In this volume of basic vocabulary, we show one sign rather than all the variations to avoid confusion for the beginning learner.
